Soon after the first Buffalo Nickels were stuck in 1913 the designer noticed the letters FIVE CENTS were wearing off to quickly. Immediately the Buffalo Nickel had a modification to recess the area around the letters to make the coins letters wear less. The first version is called 1913 Variety 1. And the second version is called 1913 Variety 2. Many Buffalo Nickels have weak strikes in many of the areas.
